Katherine

population: 8,500 (1995)

06.12.96 - 08.12.96.
Apart from Tennant Creek, this is the only town of any size between Darwin and Alice Springs. Katherine has long been an important stopping point, since the river it's built on and named after is the first permanent running water north of Alice Springs.
Kookaburra Backpackers Lodge was one of the nicest hostels during my journey. Here you can also book the canoeing trips through the gorge. If you have enough time, take one day to explore the gorge: Aboriginal rock paintings, waterfalls, plant life, and so on.
