Melbourne today is a vibrant multicultural city that is passionate about arts, sports, food and wine, and the good life. Perhaps it's best known for its trams, its cafes and restaurants, the diversity of its inner suburbs, and events such as the Melbourne Cup and the International Festival of the Arts.
Toad Hall, just a few walking minutes from the bus terminals, was one of the best-run hostels during my tour. A bed in a four-bed dorm was $15.
What you can do: Great Ocean Road tour, Phillip Island tour, cafes, restaurants, art, sightseeing.
