Darwin - Kakadu Nationalpark

population: 78,100 (1995)

02.12.96 - 06.12.96 and 20.09.97 - 22.09.97.
Darwin is an obvious base for trips to Kakadu and other Top End natural attractions, such as Litchfield National Park. It's a bit of an oasis too - whether you're travelling south to Alice Springs, west to Western Australia or east to Queensland, there are a lot of km to be covered before you get anywhere, and having reached Darwin many people rest a bit before leaving.
Melaleuca Lodge is well run and central.

What you can do: Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, East Point Reserve, Crocodile Farm, Trips to Kakadu (Hunter Safaris)(3 days) and Litchfield (1 day)
